Tempus AI's $1.5B Bid for Personalis Ignites Tumor Sequencing Gold Rush

The mRNA cancer vaccine market has created a gold rush in tumor sequencing, with Tempus AI and Personalis at the center of the opportunity. The personalized therapies require genetic mapping for each patient, and if these therapies become blockbusters, diagnostic companies could hold a lucrative tollbooth on every dose.

Tempus agreed to acquire Personalis for $16.25 a share in July, valuing the deal at $1.5 billion net of Tempus's existing stake. The stock surged 24% when Merck and Moderna reported positive late-stage melanoma results, and Personalis shares briefly reached as high as $18.

The market anomaly suggests investors are betting on a sweetened offer or a bidding war, with rival diagnostic companies such as Natera or Guardant Health potentially in the mix. The Tempus spokesperson stated that other independent parties had performed due diligence and either declined to participate or presented a bid that Personalis found less compelling.
