Ternus Takes the Reins as Apple Faces AI-Driven Challenges
John Ternus has taken over as Apple's CEO after Tim Cook's 15-year run. Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and became senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021, is the first product engineer to hold the position in Apple's history.
The new CEO will be put to the test with the upcoming iPhone launch on September 9, where Apple is expected to show off the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. However, the real challenge lies in developing a more robust AI system for Siri and other Apple devices.
Nvidia has already made significant strides in building its own AI stack, including its Vera CPU for agentic AI systems and Nemotron 3 Ultra, a 550 billion parameter mixture of experts model built for long-running agents. Nvidia is generating about $10 billion in annual revenue from robots and cars - and drones.
Ternus will have to prove that a product engineer can lead Apple's AI efforts without relying on external models or partnerships. The new CEO has his work cut out for him, but the success of Apple's AI endeavors could make or break the company's future in the industry.
