Ternus Takes the Reins at Apple Amid AI Era Challenges
Apple's CEO transition is set to take place on September 1, marking the company's first change in leadership in nearly 15 years. Tim Cook will step down as CEO and assume the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, while John Ternus, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering since 2021, takes over as CEO.
Ternus has spent around 25 years with Apple, joining in 2001. He became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and was promoted to his current role in 2021. The company's board emphasized Ternus' experience in product development, engineering management, and long-term strategy when announcing the succession plan.
The key challenge facing Ternus is not rescuing a declining business but rather finding Apple's next growth driver in the era of AI and new hardware. With revenue reaching $109.4 billion in the fiscal third-quarter earnings report for 2026, up 16% year-over-year, and diluted earnings per share at $2.02, up 29% year-over-year, Ternus must leverage Apple's strengths to embed AI into billions of devices.
The company has made significant investments in AI technology foundations such as Apple Silicon, Neural Engine, and Core ML but lags behind rivals like Google and Microsoft in terms of productization speed. To overcome this gap, Ternus will need to translate underlying technologies into user-friendly features that drive continuous adoption.
