Tesla's Cybercab could potentially operate for up to 30 cents per mile less than rival autonomous vehicles, according to Goldman Sachs.

The analysts estimated that Tesla's targeted production costs of $20,000 to $30,000 could give it a cost advantage over autonomous vehicles costing $50,000 to $100,000 upfront.

Goldman attributed this potential edge to Tesla's low-cost vehicle design, 'unboxed' manufacturing approach, and camera-only sensor system.

However, the bigger question for investors is whether Tesla can scale its self-driving software across a wider geographic area, according to Goldman. This remains an area where Alphabet Inc.'s unit Waymo has a substantial head start.
