Tex Johnston, Boeing's chief test pilot from 1948 to 1968, performed an astonishing barrel roll in the prototype of the 707 airliner on August 7, 1955. The stunt took place over Lake Washington during the Gold Cup hydroplane races, with around 200,000 spectators and airline executives watching from company yachts.

The Boeing president, Bill Allen, was visibly shaken by the maneuver, which he had not authorized. Johnston later explained that a barrel roll is a 1-G manoeuvre, where the aircraft follows a helical path through the air without experiencing forces beyond normal flight limits.

The Dash 80 prototype, as it was known internally, was Boeing's gamble on the jet age. The company had invested $16 million of its own money to build the swept-wing, four-engine jet, which could carry passengers at 550 mph, nearly twice the speed of existing propeller airliners.

The stunt helped convince airline executives that the new jetliner was safe and capable, leading to a surge in orders for the 707. The aircraft entered service with Pan American World Airways in 1958, transforming commercial aviation and cementing Boeing's position as the dominant force in commercial aircraft manufacturing.
