The Hyperscaling Giants: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google Dominate AI Data Centers
Hyperscalers are companies that own and operate massive data centers. These facilities can be enormous, with some requiring over 100 megawatts of electricity to power them. In fact, a handful of hyperscale facilities can draw several hundred megawatts of electricity, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.
The three biggest names in the hyperscaling business are Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), and Alphabet's Google (GOOG). These companies collectively control 63% of the public cloud market. They offer remote access to their data center infrastructure, making it possible for other companies to use their computing power without building their own facilities.
Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are not the only hyperscalers, however. Meta Platforms (META), Oracle (ORCL), and Apple (AAPL) also operate large data centers. In fact, Apple has several massive AI data centers for its internal use. Overseas, China's technology powerhouses Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu (BIDU) are also building enormous data centers.
While Amazon, Microsoft, and Google will likely remain the leading names in the artificial intelligence data center market, Google is expected to eventually surpass Amazon due to its strong performance of proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).
