The Mandalorian and Grogu: A Box Office Disappointment with a Silver Lining
The Mandalorian and Grogu, a live-action Star Wars film, has been deemed a box office disappointment by Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro. The movie made only $345.2 million at the global box office, making it the lowest-grossing Star Wars film to date.
However, D'Amaro pointed out that the film was still a success in other areas, such as toy sales and theme park attendance. He stated that 'The Mandalorian and Grogu drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise,' and that it 'drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.'
Disney CFO Hugh Johnston also weighed in on the topic, saying that 'the nature of the film industry is such that it is more of a portfolio game.' He stated that the diversified business of Disney helps cover the volatility that comes out of the film business.
