Thiel Macro Takes $118 Million Stake in Amazon Amid AI Buildout
Peter Thiel's hedge fund, Thiel Macro, made significant investments in Amazon during Q2, acquiring 495,000 shares valued at approximately $118 million. This represents about 28% of Thiel Macro's newly rebuilt $418.7 million portfolio, making Amazon the fund's largest single holding.
This is not a lone bet, as several other prominent investors also increased their stakes in Amazon during Q2. David Tepper's Appaloosa Management and Philippe Laffont's Coatue Management, both grew their holdings by significant margins, while Stanley Druckenmiller's Duquesne Family Office saw its stake increase by over 1,000%.
Amazon's impressive second-quarter earnings report, which included a 37% year-over-year growth in AWS revenue to $42.2 billion, validated the confidence of these investors. The company also reported a record-breaking $200.6 billion in sales and a 43% increase in operating income to $27.5 billion.
Thiel Macro's largest strategic bet, however, is on power and utility names tied to AI data-center demand. Roughly 72% of the fund's disclosed holdings sit in these regulated, infrastructure-heavy businesses, suggesting that Thiel sees Amazon as a complement to his primary investment thesis.
