Thiel Sees Upside in Amazon Despite Competition
Peter Thiel's hedge fund, Thiel Macro, has acquired a significant stake in Amazon, despite its already impressive performance since going public in 1997 with a return of 347,260%.
The billionaire investor and co-founder of Palantir Technologies is known for seeking out monopolies, but Amazon faces stiff competition in various markets, including e-commerce, cloud computing, digital advertising, and streaming services.
However, Thiel may see Amazon's infrastructure scale as a subtle competitive advantage, particularly its ability to supply the entire AI stack through its custom Trainium, Inferentia, and Graviton chips. The company also has a large equity stake in Anthropic, one of the world's leading frontier large language models.
AWS is the world's largest cloud platform and generates the bulk of Amazon's operating profits, with revenue gains accelerating as generative AI workloads surge.
