Tiny Device Can Hijack Boeing 737 Flight Systems via Legacy Connector
A team of researchers has demonstrated how a coin-sized device can hijack a Boeing 737's flight systems by exploiting an analog connector.
The researchers spent years studying the aircraft's internal electronics, focusing on an obscure maintenance port near the nose. By understanding how signals travel across the bus linked to the Flight Management Computer and cockpit control units, they built a tiny implant that can quietly intercept and alter messages without triggering alarms.
The device behaves like a classic skimming device, reading traffic flowing across the bus and selectively altering values before they appear on cockpit screens. This can allow an attacker to modify aircraft weight, fuel load, and outside air temperature, influencing performance calculations that pilots rely on.
