The testing process involved flushing sponges, balls, and rubber duckies to see how well each toilet handled solid waste and cleaning the bowl. Many of today's toilets were found to be stronger and more efficient than older models.

One top-rated option is the American Standard Colony 3 250DA104.020, a single-flush toilet for $166. Another affordable choice is the Glacier Bay N2428R-DF (Home Depot), priced at $99, which features a dual-flush option for conserving water.

For those interested in smart toilets, Consumer Reports tested several models, including the top-performing Horow Smart Toilet HRT38P, which comes with heated seats and other advanced features but has a hefty price tag of $1300.

A more budget-friendly alternative to a new toilet is to add a bidet seat attachment to an existing commode. Consumer Reports recommends the Luxe Bidet Neo 320 Plus for $66, which offers many of the same features as smart toilets without the high cost.
