Tokenomics Foundation Launched to Tame Exponential Growth of Enterprise AI Costs
The Tokenomics Foundation has been formally launched by The Linux Foundation, backed by 29 founding members including JPMorgan Chase and IBM.
This move marks a significant step in establishing standards for AI billing, which is becoming increasingly important as enterprise AI budgets continue to grow exponentially.
According to Goldman Sachs, global token usage will increase by 24-fold between now and 2030, reaching 120 quadrillion tokens per month. Industry analysts forecast more than $1 trillion in AI infrastructure investment through 2027.
The Tokenomics Foundation aims to address the challenges of standardizing AI billing, which is made harder by the fact that tokens are not homogeneous goods like cloud compute-hours. One token typically represents three to four characters of English text or approximately three-quarters of a word.
The foundation has proposed Big-T Notation, a workload classification framework that classifies AI workloads by their token and cost complexity, enabling smarter routing decisions between expensive frontier models and lower-cost open-source alternatives.
