A recent demonstration by Northrop Grumman and Boeing showcased machine-to-machine teaming between the MQ-4C Triton uncrewed maritime surveillance aircraft and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. The companies used standardized interfaces based on open mission systems and the Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI) to enable the two systems to share intelligence, coordinate mission planning, and execute tasks.

The demonstration involved a simulated scenario where a P-8A operator issued machine-readable tasking to a simulated Triton using UCI-formatted messages. The Triton system then autonomously planned and executed the transit, employed its sensors, processed findings onboard, and reported results back to the P-8A.

The demonstration also incorporated satellite relays into the data paths to represent operational communications. Northrop Grumman says that Triton's system used artificial intelligence algorithms to collect, process, and share intelligence data in response to requests from the P-8A system.
