Triton Drones Get Direct Tasking Capability in Boeing-Northrop Grumman Demo

A recent laboratory test by Boeing and Northrop Grumman has demonstrated the ability to task MQ-4C Triton surveillance drones directly from P-8A Poseidon aircraft during missions. This capability, known as universal command-and-control interface (UCI), allows for rapid and scalable collaboration between the two systems.

The test involved a simulated Triton receiving machine-readable mission orders from a P-8A operator through UCI. The Triton then autonomously planned a transit to the assigned area, collected intelligence with its onboard sensors, processed the findings using AI algorithms, and sent the results back to the Poseidon.

The demonstration comes as NATO member countries Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Norway announced their plan to operate a jointly owned fleet of Triton drones. UCI is a shared standard, meaning that nine countries beyond the United States that fly or are acquiring P-8s could potentially task allied Tritons directly from their own aircraft.
