Trump-Ordered Name Change Hits Google Maps
Google Maps has changed the name of 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' for US users, but not for Canadian users. The change reflects President Trump's executive order renaming the lake as part of a trade feud with Canada.
The president announced his decision on Thursday, citing an escalating trade dispute between the two countries that has led to reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
According to Google, its mapping service updates its names based on official government sources. The US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is one such source, and it reflects Trump's order.
However, Canadian users will continue to see the lake labeled as 'Lake Ontario', while those outside of North America may see both names.
