Trump-Ordered Rename Hits Google Maps with 'Lake America'

Google Maps has introduced a change to its labeling for Lake Ontario, now displaying 'Lake America' for users in the United States. The update follows President Donald Trump's executive order renaming the body of water amid an ongoing trade war with Canada.

The name change is only visible to US-based Google Maps users and does not affect Canadians, who will still see 'Lake Ontario' on their maps. Users outside both countries may see both names displayed.

According to Google, it pulls geographical feature names from official government sources, including the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The update reflects a change in how the US Government identifies the lake, although it is disputed by Canadians who consider 'Lake Ontario' the correct name.
