Trump Removes Tariffs on Irish Whiskey After Meeting with Martin
Irish Premier Micheál Martin says he planted a seed in US President Donald Trump's mind when discussing tariffs on Irish whiskey. The surprise announcement came during Trump's two-day visit to Ireland, where he was attending the Amgen Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort.
Trump had previously imposed a 10% tariff on Irish whiskey sold in the US, while Scotch whisky made in Northern Ireland or the UK faced no such tax. Martin explained that he brought up the issue of tariffs with Trump during their meeting, citing the impact it was having on Irish distilleries and farmers.
Trump confirmed at the golf resort that he would be removing the tariff on Irish whiskey, stating 'I am going to take the tariffs off Irish whiskey' in front of a cheering crowd. The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed the announcement, but noted that they will continue to work with EU and US counterparts to achieve a zero-for-zero arrangement for all drinks exports.
