Trump Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America', Google Maps Complies
Google Maps has begun labeling Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' in the United States. This change comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Great Lake, with effect in the US only.
According to Google, users in Canada will still see Lake Ontario on their maps, while those elsewhere may see both names listed together with 'Lake America' in parentheses.
University of Victoria geography professor Reuben Rose-Redwood explained that major mapping companies typically follow official federal geographic names. This means Google Maps is updating its labels to reflect the new name chosen by Trump's administration.
However, not everyone agrees with this change. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has rejected the name 'Lake America', stating that it will not be recognized globally as such.
