Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' in Latest Executive Order Move
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. The move is seen as another attempt by Trump to assert his authority over various aspects of American life, following previous efforts to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The Canadian province of Ontario borders the north, west, and southwest sides of the lake, with New York State on the south and east. The name change was met with skepticism by some, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who called it 'patently absurd'.
Google announced that it would update its maps to reflect the new name, citing its long-standing policy of following official government sources such as the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). However, MapQuest took a different approach, posting a screenshot of Lake Ontario on social media and launching a 'Rename Lake Ontario' web toy.
Apple Maps still shows the lake as Lake Ontario as of Sunday morning.
