Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' on Google Maps Amid Trade War

Google Maps has updated its display of geographical features in response to President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'. The change only affects users in the United States, where the lake is now labeled as 'Lake America', while Canadians will still see the original name.

The move comes amid an ongoing trade war between the US and Canada. In a recent executive order, Trump instructed the Secretary of the Interior to implement the name change within 30 days. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was updated with the new name 'Lake America', reflecting the administration's efforts to rebrand geographical features.

Not everyone agrees with the renaming. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out that the original name 'Lake Ontario' has been in use for over 400 years, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States. He emphasized that Canadians know the lake as 'Lake Ontario', regardless of what it is called.

This is not the first time Google Maps has updated its display to reflect Trump's efforts to rename geographical features. The company previously changed the name of the tallest mountain in North America from 'Denali' to 'Mount McKinley' and the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'. These changes were made in compliance with official government sources.
