Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Dozens of Countries Amid Global Trade Tensions

US President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on dozens of countries as part of his trade policy. The tariffs, which range from 10% to 12.5%, are intended to address concerns over forced labor and replace previous levies that were struck down by the Supreme Court in February.

Amazon, one of the largest retailers in the US, has received $600 million in tariff refunds from the federal government. The company's CFO, Brian Olsavsky, announced during an earnings call this week that Amazon will pass on some of these refunds to customers who paid more for goods due to tariffs.

Olsavsky stated that Amazon 'participated in the tariff refund process' but noted that the company was not the importer of record for most items sold on its platform. He also mentioned that Amazon had taken steps ahead of time, such as buying bulk quantities and pre-positioning inventory, to minimize the impact of tariffs.

The new tariffs come after Trump's administration announced in April 2025 that it would impose levies on imports from 60 countries. The move has already faced two lawsuits from small businesses, with one lawsuit accusing Amazon of not seeking tariff refunds so as to 'curry favor' with Trump.
