Trump Stirs Up Controversy in Ireland Over Comments on Reunification
US President Donald Trump has arrived in Ireland for an official visit, where he will be hosting golf stars at his Trump International resort in Doonbeg, Co Clare. The resort is currently hosting the Amgen Irish Open, a major golf tournament featuring top players including Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
Trump owns the resort in southwest Ireland, which is also hosting the Amgen Irish Open trophy presentation. He has been involved in controversy throughout his visit, particularly over comments he made on Irish reunification. During a meeting with Irish Premier Micheál Martin, Trump stated that he 'would love to see' Ireland unified.
This statement was met with pushback from the UK's Conservative Party, with deputy leader Alex Burghart saying Trump is 'very wrong' and Northern Ireland is an integral part of the UK. Downing Street also pointed out that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has previously rejected an immediate border poll.
