Trump-Touted IndyCar Race Draws Big Names in Washington
The IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix, touted by President Donald Trump, is set to take place around Washington, D.C. on Sunday. The event marks a series of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Boeing, SpaceX's Starlink, and Delta Air Lines have signed on as new sponsors.
The race will feature drivers reaching speeds of 170 miles per hour (274 kph) along historic Pennsylvania Avenue and through cultural institutions around the National Archives. The event has attracted dozens of corporate sponsors, including General Motors, Honda, United Airlines, and Amazon's AWS unit.
President Trump is expected to wave the green flag at the start of the race and take a lap in the presidential limousine. He will also invite some executives to watch from a special suite. Many senior executives and lawmakers are anticipated to attend, with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser estimating 140,000 spectators per day.
