Last week, Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing the name of the lake amid a trade dispute with Canada. The U.S. Geologic Survey's names and information system has since adopted the new name for Lake Ontario, prompting changes on tech platforms such as Google Maps and Apple.

Google confirmed that U.S. users of its map service are already seeing the lake referred to as Lake America, while Canadian users still see it as Lake Ontario. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, users are shown both names.

Critics argue that the name change is a form of cultural imperialism, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating on X that 'naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario, then, now and always.'
