Trump's Financial Disclosures Spark Insider Trading Concerns
A recent CBS News analysis of President Donald Trump's financial disclosures has sparked concerns about potential insider trading. The report highlighted 1,296 sales and 2,346 purchases worth between $212 million and $695 million during the first quarter of 2026.
Some of these transactions involved individual stocks rather than index funds, with some purchases preceding policy moves or public statements by Trump that could affect the companies involved. However, experts say this is not enough to prove insider trading.
Trump's financial managers handle his stock transactions without direction from him or his family, according to a statement by the Trump Organization. Vice President JD Vance described the idea of Trump personally buying and selling stocks as 'absurd.'
A closer look at some of the transactions cited in the report reveals a pattern that is more consistent with ordinary portfolio management than insider trading.
For example, Nvidia stock was purchased between $500,001 and $1 million on January 6. The administration relaxed export controls on some of Nvidia's AI chips the following week, allowing sales to China. However, Nvidia's stock price actually dropped after the policy change, not increased.
This pattern is repeated in other transactions, with Trump's disclosure showing sales totaling between $1.8 million and $3.6 million in Nvidia stock during March, followed by a sharp increase in the stock price.
