Trump's Immigration Crackdown: Visa Appointments Paused, H-1B Fees Soar

The US immigration system is undergoing significant changes under the Trump administration's latest moves. The State Department has paused immigrant visa applications worldwide to train consular officers on a new 'public charge' standard, which assesses whether applicants may become dependent on government benefits.

H-1B workers and their dependents will face higher fees, up to $103,265, as proposed by the administration. This increase has already drawn opposition from businesses and India's tech industry. The enhanced vetting process for H-1B applicants includes examining social media profiles and resumes, particularly those seeking technology-related visas.

The administration is also planning to revoke B1/B2 visitor visas held by people who later sought asylum. This could affect up to 200,000 foreign nationals. While a visa cancellation does not necessarily mean immediate deportation, it would result in the loss of temporary visitor status for those with pending asylum applications.
