Trump's Lake Renaming Order Sparks Tech Giant Compliance

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to rename Canada's Lake Ontario 'Lake America', prompting tech giants Apple and Google to follow suit in their Maps apps for US consumers. The move came after trade talks between Washington DC and Canada collapsed, leading Trump to impose 50% tariffs on $20-billion worth of imports from Canada.

According to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Trump personally reached out to Apple asking them to change the name to 'Lake America' for their US users. Google stated that they had to comply with the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which is the official map database of the US government, and thus updated the name in its maps for US consumers.

However, not all companies complied with the new name change. MapQuest, an older mapping service, refused to rename the lake, citing that they were not bound by the executive order.
