Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario Sparks Google Update

Google has updated its mapping service to reflect US President Donald Trump's order renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'. The tech giant made the change after Trump's Thursday announcement, reportedly in response to Canada's refusal to back down in a tariff dispute with the US.

According to Google, users in the United States will now see 'Lake America' when searching for the lake. However, those in Canada and other countries will continue to see both names displayed. This approach mirrors a similar move made last year by Google in response to Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America'. In that case, users outside of Mexico saw both names.

Canada has maintained its original name for the lake, one of the five Great Lakes that straddle the border between the two countries. The US and Canada have a long-standing dispute over trade policies, with Ottawa holding firm on the tariff issue.
