Google's philanthropic arm, Google.org, has provided funding to the University of Florida Diabetes Institute to enhance diabetes care across Florida. The institute aims to use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve diabetes detection and expand primary care provider training.

The initiative, known as Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes Diabetes (ECHO), will allow researchers to create an AI-powered virtual assistant that provides primary care clinicians with guidance on diagnosing and managing diabetes. The program will also expand to clinical sites throughout Florida.

The funding is expected to have far-reaching benefits, improving outcomes for millions of patients across the state, nation, and world. Dr. Todd Brusko, director of the University of Florida Diabetes Institute, stated that the Google.org funding and transformative program have the capacity to educate healthcare professionals and improve the lives of those living with diabetes today.
