UK and Google Test Flight Path Adjustments to Tackle Aviation's Climate Impact
The UK government and Google are collaborating on a landmark project to reduce aviation's climate impact by minimizing condensation trails, or contrails. The two-year trial, dubbed Operation Blue Skies, aims to demonstrate that minor altitude adjustments can significantly reduce contrail formation.
The Shanwick Oceanic Control Area in the northeastern Atlantic is one of the busiest air traffic corridors between Europe and North America. During peak winter months, hundreds of flights will be instructed to deviate up to 2,000 feet from their standard flight paths to avoid areas where contrails are likely to form.
The trial, which began this winter and will continue next, involves around 10,000 flights passing through the Shanwick airspace. Paul Hodgson, Google's technical lead for Operation Blue Skies, stated that even a small percentage of flights deviating from their routes could demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in contrail formation.
The project builds on earlier individual airline trials, where Google's AI-powered forecasting tool was used to help prevent contrails. The UK government is contributing over half of the 5 million pound ($6.76 million) study's costs.
