UK Cracks Down on Tech Giants Over Child Explicit Image Block
The UK government has announced plans to force Apple and Google to block explicit images on children's smartphones, following failed talks between the tech giants and government officials.
According to Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the government will start work on an act of parliament to prevent under-18s from taking, sharing or viewing nude images on their devices.
Talks between Google and Apple had not reached agreement by a three-month deadline that passed on Tuesday. Nandy stated that it was 'almost certain' that groundbreaking legislation would be required.
The proposed law will require tech companies to verify an adult user's age before they can take, view or send nude images. The restrictions will also apply to apps used by children, which may need further legislation.
