UK Peptide Research Sees Surge in Interest Amid Biohacking Boom
The research field of peptides has seen significant growth in the UK over the past two years. This increase in interest is partly due to the development of GLP-1 and weight-loss medications, as well as a broader cultural shift towards biohacking, longevity, and personalized wellness.
In 2016, researchers at the University of Edinburgh's School of Clinical Sciences developed fluorescent peptide technology capable of analyzing disease progression at an early stage. This breakthrough was licensed directly to pharmaceutical company Merck by Edinburgh Research and Innovation.
The growth of Scotland's life sciences sector has been a key factor in this increased interest. The sector now consists of approximately 750 companies and 46,000 employees nationally, with Edinburgh's BioQuarter recognized as one of the UK's most concentrated life sciences clusters.
