UK Voice Assistants Face New Rules on Internet Radio Access
UK regulators are proposing new rules for voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri. The rules aim to give users more control over their internet radio services and protect them from unwanted advertisements and interruptions.
The Media regulator Ofcom published a consultation on its proposals for 'radio selection services' available through connected devices. According to the proposal, voice assistants would need to let users play requested internet radio services without charging stations for access.
Ofcom has recommended that these services be designated under the Media Act, but a government decision is still pending. The consultation closes on November 9, and a final decision will likely be made after that date.
