Ulta Beauty Joins Retailers Using License Plate Readers to Combat Theft
Ulta Beauty has joined Home Depot and Lowe's in using automated license plate reader cameras at some of its US stores as an anti-theft measure. The cameras, produced by Flock, have been installed at roughly 1,500 locations, according to a source.
The technology allows the company to track different cars coming in and out of parking lots, although Ulta Beauty has confirmed that it does not use facial recognition. This move has sparked criticism from customers, with UltraViolet, a woman-led gender justice organization, calling on followers to demand that Ulta Beauty stop using the cameras immediately.
Both Home Depot and Lowe's have previously confirmed the use of automated license plate reader technology at their stores, citing prevention of theft and fraud as key reasons. However, some customers are concerned about the potential invasion of privacy.
