United Airlines Cancels 9/11 Flyover in Denver Amid Coordination Issues
A planned flyover by United Airlines to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks has been canceled in Denver due to a breakdown in coordination between the airline, local authorities, and the Air National Guard.
The event was intended as an aerial tribute to the victims of the tragic event, with one UA Boeing 777 escorted by four F-16 Fighting Falcons from the ANG's 120th Fighter Squadron. The flyover was set to take place at 9:03 AM on September 11, the same time that UA Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field.
According to local authorities, the plan was for the Boeing 777 to fly over United's Flight Training Center in Denver, with the timing and route intended to mirror the flight path of UA175, which hit one of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. However, concerns arose that the display could appear as a real hijacking, prompting local authorities to send out notifications to prevent confusion.
United Airlines ultimately decided not to proceed with the flyover after difficulties in coordinating the event and criticism from local community members.
