United Airlines' Light Pole-Struck Boeing 767-400ER Set to Return to Service After Rio Repairs
A United Airlines Boeing 767-400ER that struck a light pole as it approached Newark Liberty International Airport in May is set to return to service.
The plane, which was flying from Venice and had 220 passengers on board, landed safely after hitting the light pole, but sustained significant damage to its aft fuselage. The damage included three punctures, ranging from six inches to 46 inches long, as well as several dents and creases.
The plane was subsequently removed from service and underwent repairs in Rio de Janeiro, where United maintains extensive maintenance facilities. Having a base in Brazil helps reduce operational labor costs compared with undertaking work in the US.
Once back in operation, the 24-year-old jet will join the other 15 767-400ERs that United operates, configured with a total of 231 seats spread across four classes of service.
