The airline operates this route seasonally with a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which offers a rare opportunity for pilots to engage in visual approaches.
The flight, UA 522, departs EWR on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and takes approximately six hours and 50 minutes. The return flight, UA 523, operates with the same frequency and duration, but is slightly longer at seven hours and 30 minutes.
Madeira's approach to Runway 05 requires pilots to fly downwind and then perform a visual circle-to-land maneuver below 1,000 feet. This type of procedure is rare in commercial aviation and presents a unique challenge for pilots.
