United Airlines Unveils Record-Breaking Route to Azorean Island
United Airlines is expanding its European route network with a new shortest nonstop flight to Europe. The airline announced that it will begin flying from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey to Lajes (TER) on Terceira in the Azores starting June 9, 2027. This route will be operated by the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and will have a block time of just five hours and 15 minutes.
The new route is part of United's wider expansion plans for its European network, which includes several other new routes that will leverage the strength of its next-generation narrowbody fleet. The Azores' mid-Atlantic location makes it an attractive destination for travelers from East Coast hubs in the United States.
According to Cirium data, United's flights between Newark and Ponta Delgada averaged a load factor of 75.44% in the 12 months to May 2026. This suggests that demand for travel to the Azores is strong, which could bode well for the new route.
