United Cancels 9/11 Boeing Flyover Over Denver Amid Community Backlash
A United Airlines Boeing 777 flyover over Denver, scheduled to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks, has been canceled due to 'concerns in the community'. The flyover was planned for exactly 9:03 a.m., the time when hijackers crashed United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. According to a statement from United Airlines, the airline had also planned to unveil a 9-foot-11-inch monument made from World Trade Center steel honoring the airline crew members aboard Flights 175 and 93.
The Denver Office of Emergency Management had previously posted about the flyover on social media, warning residents that it did not signal an emergency. The city's mayor office told KDVR that they support honoring 9/11 victims and first responders but recognized that the flyover 'may be jarring'. United Airlines still plans to proceed with other events of the day.
