United Cancels Denver Flyover After Community Backlash
A United Airlines Boeing 777 flyover in Denver, planned to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks, was canceled due to community concerns. The flyover, scheduled for 9:03 a.m., had been intended to coincide with the exact time that hijackers crashed United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
The event had also included plans for an aircraft flyover as 'a meaningful gesture to honor the memory of those lost within the pilot community,' but these were suspended due to concerns in the community, according to a statement from the airline.
United stated that it would instead carry on with other events planned for the day. The Denver Office of Emergency Management had initially alerted residents about the flyover, assuring them it did not signal an emergency.
