UnitedHealth Group Reports Flat Revenue, But Soaring Earnings
UnitedHealth Group reported its second-quarter 2026 results, showing revenue essentially flat year-over-year at $112 billion. Despite this, net income attributable to common shareholders rose significantly to $5.48 billion, and diluted earnings per share increased by 61% to $6.04.
The company's consolidated revenues were stable year-over-year, with UnitedHealthcare performing steadily while Optum declined about 2% due to Optum Health. Membership and channel shifts led to a contraction of roughly 1.6 million in UnitedHealthcare membership across Medicare Advantage, risk-based commercial, and Medicaid.
Earnings from operations improved to $8 billion in the quarter, driven by margin improvements in both Optum and UnitedHealthcare. Management cited elevated medical cost trends and impacts from the No Surprises Act as challenges, but implemented pricing, benefit design, and reserve actions to manage costs.
