UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts in connection with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione, who had been facing state and federal charges, admitted to traveling to New York City for an investor conference where he knew Thompson would be speaking.
Mangione claimed that his actions were motivated by a desire for revenge against the healthcare system, which he felt had failed him due to years of severe back pain. He stated that he researched the event online and contacted UnitedHealthcare posing as an investor with over $50 million in capital to gain access to the conference location.
Prosecutors outlined evidence they would have presented at trial, including footage of the shooting and Mangione fleeing the scene. The Thompson family released a statement expressing gratitude for the guilty plea and their hope that justice will be served.
