UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In court, Mangione read a statement outlining his motive for the crime, citing severe back pain and research into UnitedHealth Group's investor conference as factors that led him to pose as an investor and attend.

Mangione admitted to stalking Thompson before fatally shooting him on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan. The NYPD released images of a person of interest, who was later identified as Mangione. He was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting.

Thompson had been CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, and his company faced scrutiny over its denial rate for post-acute care claims. The Senate investigative report found that UnitedHealthcare's denials surged from 10.9% in 2020 to 22.7% in 2022.
