UnitedHealthcare Cuts Prior Authorization Requirements Amid Growing Pressure
Health insurers are making moves to address a major concern for Americans - prior authorization requirements. UnitedHealthcare will reduce its prior authorization requirements by 30% for some of its insurance plans starting October 1, affecting Medicare Advantage and certain commercial plans.
This change comes as federal and state governments pressure insurers to improve transparency and speed up approval processes. In fact, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented a rule at the beginning of this year requiring insurers to send prior authorizations within a week and provide specific reasons for denials.
Louise Norris, a health policy analyst, notes that cutting prior authorization requirements allows patients to access healthcare more quickly and easily. She also points out that these relaxed requirements are unlikely to lead to higher costs for the insured.
