UnitedHealthcare Cuts Red Tape on Medical Approvals
UnitedHealth Group, UNH, is cutting back on prior-authorization requirements for a broad range of medical services. Starting October 1st, UnitedHealthcare will eliminate the need for approvals on procedures that previously required them.
The overhaul aims to reduce bureaucracy and make healthcare easier for patients while also protecting against potential cost increases. The insurer has set a goal of eliminating prior-authorization requirements for 30% of services that currently require them.
UnitedHealthcare will no longer need approvals for selected outpatient procedures, echocardiograms, therapies, and chiropractic care. This change is part of the company's effort to simplify the medical approval process and reduce administrative costs.
The impact of this move could be significant, as UnitedHealth Group reported $112 billion in revenue during its second-quarter results but only $8 billion in operating earnings, resulting in a 7.1% operating margin.
