UnitedHealthcare Drops Prior-Authorization Requirements for 30% of Services
UnitedHealth Group has announced plans to remove prior-authorization requirements for 30% of its services by year-end. The changes will take effect on October 1, impacting cardiology, laboratory testing, therapy, and selected musculoskeletal services across commercial insurance, Medicare Advantage, and individual Affordable Care Act plans.
The move aims to accelerate payments by up to 50% for approximately 1,400 rural hospitals. This decision comes after the company reported $112 billion in revenue and $8 billion in operating earnings during its second-quarter results, with a net margin of 4.9%. The current share price of $394.745 sits 33.38% below the estimated value of $592.50.
Analysts believe that reducing bureaucracy could lead to cost savings and improved relationships between patients and providers. However, some concerns exist about potential increases in medical utilization due to fewer approval checks.
