A visit to Coca-Cola's World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta revealed a wealth of information about the company's history. The timeline, which spans over 140 years, takes visitors through the evolution of the iconic brand from its humble beginnings as a pharmacy experiment to its current status as one of the most recognizable brands on Earth.

The first stop on the tour was 1886, where pharmacist John Stith Pemberton mixed up a flavored syrup and combined it with carbonated water. Five cents a glass, the original Coca-Cola averaged about nine servings a day in year one. The name 'Coca' came from the coca leaves used to create the drink, while 'Cola' was derived from the kola nut caffeine.

One of the most surprising facts on display is that the original Coca-Cola contained cocaine, derived from coca leaves, alongside caffeine from kola nuts. Crude cocaine was removed from the drink in the early 1900s, and modern Coca-Cola does not contain cocaine. Your Diet Coke has enough to answer for already without this one.

As the tour progressed, it became clear that Pemberton's creation quickly outgrew his pharmacy counter. Atlanta businessman Asa Candler took control of the formula and company in the 1890s, gradually expanding operations beyond a single location. By the end of the decade, Coca-Cola had installed reminders everywhere, from branded clocks to calendars.

The contour bottle, patented in November 1915, was designed to be recognizable even when broken or seen in the dark. This attention to detail has helped Coca-Cola maintain its distinct brand identity over the years. The secret formula, used as collateral for a bank loan after Ernest Woodruff's group bought the company in 1919, remains locked away in a vault that visitors can see but not understand.

In April 1985, Coca-Cola made the ill-fated decision to replace its flagship U.S. formula with New Coke, a sweeter version backed by taste-test data and competitive pressure from Pepsi. The backlash was swift and intense, with people stockpiling the old formula and treating the soda recipe change as a referendum on their own childhoods. Seventy-nine days later, the company brought back the original formula as Coca-Cola Classic.

The same mechanism that created the iconic brand is also responsible for its enduring success. By making the existence of the secret part of the recipe, Coca-Cola has created an air of mystery and allure that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
