UNMC Implements Automated Data Classification System
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Medicine are implementing an automated data classification system to protect sensitive information. Starting September 8, Microsoft Data Classification labels will be automatically applied across their Microsoft 365 environment.
This move supports the institution's enterprise-wide effort to identify, understand, and safeguard institutional data in accordance with established policy and regulatory requirements.
The labels align directly with the four classifications defined in IM-50: Level 1 (Public) for low-risk data, Level 2 (Internal) for moderate-risk data intended for internal use only, Level 3 (Confidential) for high-risk data requiring authorization to access or store, and Level 4 (Highly Restricted) for high-risk data that must be tightly controlled from creation through destruction.
