The US Air Force has announced plans to replace its aging Boeing E-3G Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) platform. The E-3G suffers from outdated radar technology, a lack of spare parts, and maintenance issues.

Originally received in 34 Sentries and three E-3Bs, the US Air Force currently has 12 E-3Gs stored at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. Six were deployed in support of Operation Epic Fury, while one was destroyed during an Iranian missile strike on Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia.

The Boeing 737-based E-7A will provide the US Air Force with advanced airborne battle management, command and control, and moving target indication (BMC2/AMTI) capabilities. Under a $1.2 billion contract issued in February 2023, Boeing is designing and producing an initial pair of E-7A Wedgetail airborne battle management and command-and-control aircraft.

The contract value has since increased to $2.56 billion after being definitized on August 9, 2024. The rapid prototyping program involves integrating US-based mission systems into the original design developed for the Royal Australian Air Force.
