US Consumers Shift to More Selective Spending Amid Higher Prices
US consumers continue to spend, but their behavior is becoming more selective and price-sensitive. Recent earnings reports from major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot suggest that households are prioritizing necessities and lower-cost purchases while delaying larger expenditures.
The shift in spending patterns is particularly notable for Walmart, which is often seen as a bellwether for the US consumer. The company's shares fell 9.2% after its latest earnings report showed weaker third-quarter outlook and signs of pressure on consumers.
Walmart's results indicated that customers are still visiting stores but spending less per trip. US store traffic increased 1.5%, while spending per trip rose 1.1%. At Sam's Club, visits increased 7%, but spending per visit declined 2.5%.
Strategist Bryan Hayes at Zacks Investment Research noted that investors believe current consumer spending may be close to its peak, given the valuations previously assigned to major retailers. Alexander Lis, chief investment officer at Social Discovery Ventures, pointed out that consumers are becoming increasingly price-sensitive, forcing retailers to cut prices to attract and retain shoppers.
